Don Freeman Dropping His CEO Title By Michael Hart - 05/05/2008
Continuing a family tradition, Donald S. Freeman Jr. will step aside July 1 as CEO of Freeman, one of the two largest general service contractors in the tradeshow industry, as two other family members move up. Freeman, 70, will continue as chairman.

The Southwest Washington Convention & Visitors Bureau in Vancouver, Wash., hired Rosemary Cooke as director of sales. The Jordan Edmiston Group Inc. appointed Thomas Creaser to the newly created position of executive vice president. Michael Daniels joined ConventionPlanit.com as director of special markets.

After Sept. 11, the exhibition industry went into an economic downturn that, along with the larger economy, had actually begun some time in advance of the terrorist attacks themselves. The resulting “perfect storm” of travel restrictions, coupled with a reluctance to gather in large public assembly halls, spelled disaster for exhibitions.

Freeman promoted Nelson Aveleno to vice president of exposition services sales for its national sales group. Aveleno joined Freeman in 1999 as director of sales for the western region of the executive sales group. In his new role, he will remain in Anaheim. Guy Bagg was named director of group sales for the mid-Atlantic region at Preferred Hotel Group.

Tradeshow Week Advertising Director Nancy Walker has been appointed associate publisher. Walker will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the magazine as the search for a publisher continues. Patrick Buchen, president and CEO of Adjuvant Expos, was named chairman of the Intl. Assn. of Exhibitions and Events' recently formed Public Events Council.
